1/48 M4 SHERMAN MODEL 1943 TURRET W/O PISTOL PORT

kit #48001 US retail price $4.95.

The M4 Sherman had many variations in hull and turret design during it's production run. One of the turret variations was the D50878 "low bustle" turret without the pistol port and thickened cheek armor. IRON DIVISION, a division of Top Gun Military Apparel brings us a nice rendition of this turret and a very reasonable price.

THE KIT

The kit consists of 1 resin turret packaged in a plastic bag. No instructions are included as really none are needed.

The turret casting is very clean without any visible air bubbles on my example. Included on the casting are three lifting eyes, ventilator, base for the spotlight mount and several other details. The gunner and loader's periscopes are cast in the raised position. The turret roof also has some foundry numbers cast onto it. The opening for the 2-inch smoke mortar is nicely done with a raised lip around it. There is a very subtle casting texture on the turret so surfacing products shouldn't be needed on it. The base of the turret bustle is molded with a casting seam that maybe a bit overdone. It is nothing major and can be easily toned down with a sanding stick. Check your references for the particular turret you are modeling. The only real dig that I have on this turret is the use of the earlier version of the E5721 gun shield. This gun shield has a bolt flange on the gunner's side of it . Iron Division has cast this directly into the turret. However, many reference photos show the later version without the flange in use on this type of turret. By casting the gun shield in the turret like this, the modeler maybe limited to very specific tanks to model. Again, check your photo references.

The turret measures well with the drawings in Hunnicutt's Sherman and compares nicely with the Tamiya turret . It is a drop fit into the Tamiya M4A1 hull . I also tried it on the Formations Models M4A2 conversion and the Faxon Conversions M4 Composite conversion and it dropped in there as well.

CONCLUSION

This is a very nice conversion for the increasing number of 1/48 scale Sherman kits on the market. It is well done and nicely priced. Highly recommended!
