1/48 IRON DIVISION EARLY T-23 76MM TURRET W/UPGRADE PARTS FOR HOBBY BOSS SHERMANS

kit #48014 US retail price $5.95.

A nice alternative turret for the Hobby Boss M4A1(76)VVSS.

THE KIT

The kit consists of 3 resin pieces packaged in a plastic bag. No instructions are included.

Hobby Boss has brought out quite a few Sherman kits during the past couple of years. All of them had faults in one shape or form. Their M4A1(76), kit #84801 has problems with the turret and upper hull. With this conversion, Iron Division tackles some of the turret issues.

The Iron Division turret is nicely cast. It has a nice casting texture compared to the smooth kit turret. The pistol port is smoothly blended into the turret side. This turret depicts a very early T23 type turret cast by Union Steel Company. As such, it does not have the rear turret ventilator which makes it perfect for an Operation Cobra M4A1(76).

The commander's cupola which was way to big on the Hobby Boss kit has been has had the cupola corrected to the proper size. Other details such as casting numbers and a lip on the smoke mortar opening have also been added. The turret bustle is shaped well but mine had a few air bubbles in it. These are easy to fill with epoxy or super glue. The gun shield does not include the lifting rings. These will have to be sourced from the kit or made from scratch.

There are a couple of minor problems that I found. First off, the trunions stick out too far. They should sit flush or slightly recessed. They can sanded down. The other item is the antenna mounts. The one behind the commander's cupola should be circular with four bolt heads while the one behind the loader's position should be a circular disc with a bolt head in the center of it. These can be taken care of with pieces of styrene. Bob at Iron Division has been notified of these issues and will be taking care of them when the molds are redone.

The turret ring needs a bit of sanding to fit in either the Hobby Boss upper hull or the Iron Division M4A1 Wet Upper Hull. I also cut the locking tabs off for a better fit.

CONCLUSION

Iron Division has another good product with this turret. It corrects one of the major problems with the Hobby Boss turret. The few problems I found with this turret are quite minor and will be corrected by Iron Division. Highly recommended.
