1/48 IRON DIVISION M4 SHERMAN ACCESSORIES SET #1 #48010

US retail price $9.95.

THE KIT

This resin conversion kit consists of twenty five parts: turret shell, turret ring, two cupolas and hatch covers, ventilators, periscopes and three different mantle styles in a plastic bag. No instructions are included.

If you have an extra Sherman hull lying around and donít know what do with it or you if want to spruce up your Tamiya Sherman turret, then this set is for you! Using the Tamiya 75mm low bustle turret as a base, Iron Division has produced a very nice turret accessory set for use with the Tamiya Sherman kits.

The kit consists of twenty five parts molded in white and yellow resin. The white colored resin turret was cast very cleanly with no air bubbles to be seen. No foundry or casting markings are present. The smoke mortar opening is cast correctly with a raised lip around it. If you want to build this as an earlier turret without it, just sand off the lip and fill in the opening. Thin resin flash needed to be removed from the openings for the cupola and pistol port. The opening for the gun mount is covered in thin resin that can be removed if desired. I left it in place in my example as I felt that added additional support for the gun mounts.

When fitting the turret ring to the turret, I found that it needed a fair amount of sanding to get a good fit with the turret. However, it fit the Tamiya kits perfectly without any sanding except for the removal of some minor resin flash.

The kit provides three types of gun mantles: M34; M34 modified for the gunnerís telescope; and the M34A1. Each gun shield needed some sanding before fitting into the turret opening. The gun shields all needed to have some resin flash removed as well. Clean up of these parts was quick and easily accomplished is a #11 blade and sanding stick.

The kit provides both the twin hatch and vision port commanderís cupolas. Both cupolas needed to have their rings narrowed in order to fit the turret provided in the kit. This was also necessary to fit them in the Tamiya kits. However, they fit the Hobby Boss and Iron Division T23 turrets without any sanding. After removal from the resin pour blocks, the hatch covers and periscopes were cleaned up and test fitted without any problems to the Iron Division turret and cupolas.

CONCLUSION

For just a hair under $10.00, Iron Division has provided Shermanaholics with more goodies for their parts boxes. If you have a bunch of extra hulls lying around and would like additional options for your turrets, this set is a good start. Highly recommended.
